It was a cold and windy day in South Africa when a little squirrel fell out of her nest. Simone Serfontein was at her friend’s house when she heard the squirrel crying for his mother, but she never came to get him. After finding the squirrel, who is now known as Dingetjie, she decided to take her home with her. She had no idea at the time that this was the beginning of a life-changing adventure!
“We honestly did not think that this tiny thing would make it, but we needed to try and help this baby,” Simone recounted.”When we picked her up her body temperature was very cold and she was obviously very scared,” Simone said. “Her eyes were still closed … We kept her nice and warm and she eventually stopped screaming.”
Simone and her boyfriend Christof did tons of research to try and figure out how best to take care of the squirrel, and she had to get up numerous times during the night to feed her.”I did not really know anything about raising a baby squirrel and had to do a lot of research, I never knew that raising a squirrel could be this hard,” she said.
“She did not like the idea of being in a cage at all,” Simone said, adding that she made a little nest for Dingetjie in a shoe box filled with tissue. “It was only a matter of time until she refused to sleep in the shoe box and preferred the bed with me.”
Simone did not want to leave Dingetjie, so she even brought the squirrel to work with her.”She went with me to work every day for the first three months,” she said. “I normally fed her when I woke up and then get ready and then she got into my scarf, shirt or anywhere warm close to my body and off we went to work.”
Simone knew that she would eventually have to say goodbye to Dingetjie, since she is a wild animal, after all. The couple eventually took her to their garden and laid her in the grass to see how she would react.”Next thing, she got into a tree and her natural instincts immediately kicked in,” Simone recounted. “It was pretty amazing and sad at the same time.”
Though she was sad to see her go, Simone knew that being in the wild was the best thing for Dingetjie. The story does not end there, however, as Dingetjie kept coming back to visit over and over!”But then every day when I came home she would be there either waiting or maybe she’d see me walking home from a tree or something and then a few minutes later she will run inside to come and say hello,” she said.
This went on for six months, and Simone eventually noticed that Dingetjie was gaining weight.”We knew she made a few squirrel friends but also thought that she was not yet sexually active,” she said. “We then discovered that she was pregnant.”
“We thought she left, and because she was pregnant, she might have decided to be wild after all. But that was not the case,” Simone said.Dingetjie ended up giving birth in the nest that Simone had made for her!
Sadly, the baby was stillborn, but Simone does not believe that Dingetjie was ready to become a mother at just six months old. One year later, Dingetjie became pregnant again and returned to make a nest at Simone’s home out of toilet paper.
This time, the birth was a success, and Dingetjie had Simone right by her side when her healthy baby was born!Simone can’t believe the bond she shares with the squirrel she rescued two years ago.”I really think that it’s impossible to ever explain the relationship we have with her and the relationship she has with us, It’s honestly the most incredible thing I have ever experienced,” she said. Please,SHARE this story so your friends and family can see this as well!
